Children of the King - 333
#1
My pastor asked me to come up with a song to use throughout a multi-month sermon series on Romans. Feel free to critique it as hard as you like.

Children of the King

V1

When we were bound in chains
Slaves to sin and fear
Shackled by our misery and pain

A mighty Saviour came
Deliverance drew near
He took/bore our loss and suffered for our gain    (So...)

Chorus

If we have ears to hear,
We'll celebrate and sing
No longer chained in fear,
(-or- We are not chained in fear)
We're children of the King
The Father we revere
Is God of ev'rything
We are not chained in fear,
We are children of the King

V2

Our God has made a way
For us to be atoned
With royal blood, a King's ransom was paid

Now we are saved by faith
In Jesus Christ alone
His righteousness is ours by faith today

Chorus

If we have ears to hear
We'll celebrate and sing
No longer chained in fear
We're children of the King
The Father we revere
Is God of ev'rything
We are not chained in fear
We are children of the King

Bridge

Found when we were broken
Sick and suffering
Ransomed and adopted
We're children of the King (repeat bridge)

Chorus

If we have ears to hear
We'll celebrate and sing
No longer chained in fear
We're children of the King
The Father we revere
Is God of ev'rything
We are not chained in fear
We are family now, so...

Chorus

If we have ears to hear
We'll celebrate and sing
No longer chained in fear
We're children of the King
The Father we revere
Is God of ev'rything
We are not chained in fear
We are children of the King

Hi DH
Well as I read it it sang to me
When that happens - when I read a lyric, it seems ready to go!
I think I prefer
we are not chained in fear ( in stead of the " no longer")

it is scripturally sound, rhyme scheme works, hook is strong and repeated in the right places
seems ready to roll!

Originally I had written "We are not chained in fear" and then I changed it to make it more similar to "...no longer slaves to fear" from Romans 8. I think I'll most likely revert to "We are not chained in fear..."

So... did it sing to you in dulcet hamster tones? LOL!

Well, if nobody sees anything glaringly wrong with this write, I'm going to record a rough demo and present it to my pastor as well as the head of music ministry at my home church. Perhaps I'll just give them the lyrics and sing it to them first, waiting to record it until after they have given their input.

That's so exciting! It all starts with our local body!

I'm hearing those dulcet hamster tones myself, and with your permission I will make some changes that I hope you might like. Just the chorus and I tried ti keep them in line with your verses as best i could.

If you have ears to hear,
Then celebrate and sing

No longer chained by fear,
We're children of the King

The Father we revere
Is God of ev'rything

There is nothing more to fear,
We are children of the King!

Hope you don't mind.

A problem I have with this write is that the hook (We're children of the King) is not supported by explicit reference to adoption until the bridge. I haven't been able to figure out how to correct this while respecting the the rhyme structure I have used in the verses. This may just end up as yet another entry in the long parade of flawed corporate worship songs, unfortunately.

In verse two, couldn't you say, "We are sons by faith" instead of "We are saved by faith" ?

I see what your problem is but You could go with
verse1- sets the sence
verse2- introduces the solution
chorus- introduces the idea that there is more we can be children of the King!
bridge -tells us that we are children of the king
chorus -realization that we are children of the King!
This could potentially solve your problem, about the only thing I see missing is the how, but that could set up, or rather be a set up for your preacher's sermon. Just a thought. hang in there don't give it up just yet.
P.S. Have you recorded it yet?

I don't really love the following tweak, but I could go from this:

"Now we are saved by faith
In Jesus Christ alone
His righteousness is ours by faith today"

...to this:

"Adopted now through faith
In Jesus Christ alone,
His righteousness is ours by faith today"

I have recorded instruments only - no vocal track as of yet.
