  "JOY!" - Original Song
Posted by: PraisingHim - 09-11-2017, 02:32 PM - Forum: Song Critiques - Replies (8)

https://soundcloud.com/user-864970489/joy

First time posting my music here! Here's a song titled "JOY!" that I wrote and produced. I guess you'd call it R&B Gospel, or maybe urban gospel; I get confused by so many sub-genres!

It's my own home studio recording with a vintage synth, a few synth modules, drum machines and a sampler. Recording is done on a 16-track hardware digital recorder. When necessary, post-production (which consists of extra EQ fine tuning and overall volume adjustment) is done on computer.

I have a very direct style of producing. I've found that it helps my sound cut through, as opposed to using a lot of panning, reverb, etc. The more lush, spacious kind of sound doesn't really fit my music.

I'm very open to suggestions, e.g., do you think my music could use a more spacious sound, do any parts need to be pulled back or brought more upfront, or...whatever!

Thanks for listening!

"JOY!"

The gift of joy is precious
Because it comes from Jesus
Joy is everlasting
Because it comes from the true King
Joy is greater than the moment
That's because it's heaven-sent
Trust in God and believe it
And you're sure to receive it

(Chorus)
Come let us share our joy
With every girl and boy
Come let us spread the love
From the Lord above
Come let us kneel and pray
Be grateful every day
And thank the Lord above
For giving us His love

Joy is with us always
Even through the dark days
Earthly pleasures don't last
Heaven's joy is steadfast
Take His joy into your heart
Give your life a new start
It will leave you never
The wealth of joy is forever

(Repeat chorus twice)

JOY! (repeat 8 times)

  Halfway from Birmingham
Posted by: pshell - 09-11-2017, 12:53 PM - Forum: Song Critiques - Replies (10)

I'm new & this is the first song I'm trying to post.
I'm not sensitive about being critiqued, so tear it apart all you like.
I know the performance is rough, but this was one of 15 songs I did in the 3 hours of studio time I could afford. They came out good enough for the copyright office.
Hope you enjoy it.

HALFWAY FROM BIRMINGHAM

Music and lyrics by Paul Shell
copyright 2016

I put the lights of Birmingham in my mirrors before dawn.
I'll be pushing 18 wheels west to Oklahoma before the day is gone.
I got a slow air leak in a brake line and a warrant for failure to appear.
But there's mortgage money waiting out there on an L.A shipping pier.
My wife prays that God will see us through. I'm just looking for some highway sign.
Lord, I'm a sinful man, but sometimes I swear I can hear you in the highway whine,
Saying come down from your fences and find a better way,
If you're hauling halfway from Birmingham to Calvary today.
Halfway from Birmingham.

He passed me on a hard tail panhead. He was chasing his setting sun.
I swear I could read his life in every patch and scar he'd won.
At sixteen got his first tattoo. Eighteen he's a Marine Corps boot.
Then he's fighting a war for politicians who don't deserve his salute.
Once you taste the fruit of knowledge of what people can do, you'll never be the same.
Maybe it's only someone who was crucified like you, you can hear calling out your name,
Saying come down from your fences and find a better way,
If you're riding halfway from Birmingham to Calvary today.
Halfway from Birmingham.

He dreamed cathedrals as a young man, but now he drives the road.
Running a third-hand beat up Peterbilt with a chapel for a load.
His only incense is the sting of diesel from the trucks idle there at rest.
He's a voice crying out to the wanderers in a blacktop wilderness.
And he calls out to the drivers, the bikers, the tourists and the whores,
Saying the toll ahead's too much to pay but it's been paid for you before.
And you can come down from your fences and find a better way,
If you're hauling halfway from Birmingham to Calvary today.
Halfway from Birmingham.
Halfway from any town.

  Hello all

Hi, everyon,
I'm Paul Shell. I just signed up on the site. I'm a songwriter from Oklahoma, USA. I hope to get some songs posted soon, but my stuff is on Soundcloud and I'm stuck using my phone for right now. I've discovered there a lot of things on Soundcloud you can only do from a PC.
The stuff I write tends to be outlaw gospel - songs about bikers, illegal truckers, loose women. Basically, not suitable for church services. I'm not sensitive about being critiqued. I'll try to send a song for people to tear apart as soon as I get access to a computer.
Happy writing everyone!

Reconcile Me - Prayer song to the Holy Trinity
Posted by: swesternmusic - 09-07-2017, 05:29 PM - Forum: Song Critiques - Replies (4)

The genesis and inspiration sprung from the Carey Landry classic “Abba Father”, popular when I was much younger. It's meant to be able to be used for Trinity Sunday services or a Sunday service where Mark 12:30 might be used (“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.”) The chorus reinforces this and I’m praying people will find it memorable and easily recallable during their day.

“Reconcile Me”
(AKA / Abba Father, Son and Holy Spirit)

Verse
Abba Father, Author of my Salvation
Write on my soul, a faith-filled vocation
I shall be your child, & You will be my Maker

Imprint my soul with your loving decree
Passion and hope, all You desire for me
I shall not be afraid, I trust in You my Father

Chorus
Have mercy on my soul
Mold and shape my mind
Refine my heart
Reconcile me to you

Verse
Jesus, My Lord, the Craftsman of my will
Carve in me sainthood before life takes its toll
I shall become contrite, humble in my witness

Frame the path from here to Your kingdom
That I might live in the beauty of your wisdom
Unafraid, I will live fearless

Chorus
Have mercy on my soul
Mold and shape my mind
Refine my heart
Reconcile me to you

Verse
Holy Spirit, Blacksmith of purification
Draw out of my heart, love for Your Great Commission
Form me in the forge of Your perfect righteousness

Stoke the fires my heart must pass through
To quench desires that turn my eyes from you
Holy Fire, burn away my brokenness

Chorus
Have mercy on my soul
Mold and shape my mind
Refine my heart

Chorus
Have mercy on my soul
Mold and shape my mind
Refine my heart
Reconcile me to you

  Worship Him Now
Posted by: firesong - 09-01-2017, 06:31 PM - Forum: Song Critiques - Replies (1)

So I'm watching PBS and Nathan Carter (an Irish country music singer) is in concert and this guy is great and I feel like I want to write a Celtic flavored song...but not about the lassies or the pubs or old Ireland...so this is what came out.  https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13623295

Worship Him Now
words and music: Dan Simmons

I can feel it rising in my soul
I can sense His love for me...so I'm letting go

And I'll worship Him now
So let the fire fall
Let the Spirit rise in me
As I give Him my all
Glory and praise to Him belong
I'll lift up my heart
I'll lift up my hands
I'll lift up my song...
And worship

I can feel it burning like a fire
Deeper and deeper...higher and higher

I'll worship Him now
Let the fire fall
Let the Spirit rise in me
I'll give Him my all
Glory and praise to Him belong
I'll lift up my heart
I'll lift up my hands
I'll lift up my song...
And worship

(instrumental)

I'll lift up my heart
I'll lift up my hands
I'll lift up my song

Oh, I'll worship Him now
So let the fire fall
Let the Spirit rise in me
As I give Him my all
Glory and praise to Him belong
I'll lift up my heart
I'll lift up my hands
I'll lift up my song

I'll lift up my heart
I'll lift up my hands
I will lift up my song
And I'll worship

Only Your love will satisfy thirst.

  Stand Befrore Your Throne
Posted by: BobisBack - 08-28-2017, 09:17 AM - Forum: Song Critiques - Replies (4)

I guess since I've already paid to record the demo, there is not a whole lot
of change I am going to make, but am open to suggestions if someone eventually
wants to record it.

Stand Before Your Throne

I am weak, in the presence of Your beauty
I grow faint from the touch of Your hand
I collapse at one glimpse of Your Glory
With You this near, I just cannot stand

Lord who can stand before You?
Who can climb that hill?
Purify my heart
Purge me of my will  (This is the one line I've changed half a dozen times and not completely sold on)

So I can stand before Your throne
And join the angels in "Holy, Holy!"
Worship You alone
Holy! Holy! Holy! Holy!
I'll stand before Your throne
And join the angels in "Holy, Holy!"
Who Was and Is to Come
Holy! Holy! Holy Holy Lord

Who Was and Is and Is to Come
Holy Holy Holy Holy  (x4)
